A monsoon pounded Tucson’s northwest side, flooding a Safeway after two storm pipes on the roof burst, said Capt. Adam Goldberg, a Northwest Fire District spokesman.

Safeway, 9705 N. Thornydale Road near West Linda Vista Boulevard, was evacuated and closed, and may reopen today, he said.

The storm downed trees at the Foothills Mall, in the West Ina Road and Interstate 10 area, and in the area of Linda Vista and Thornydale. A tree fell on three cars in the Northwest YMCA parking lot, 7700 N. Shannon Road, Goldberg said.

Winds were higher than 60 mph, the National Weather Service said.
