Two dogs were killed in a house fire on Tucson's east side Sunday afternoon.

Neighbors called 911 to report seeing smoke coming from a home in the 7300 block of East Calle Nostalgico, near North Sabino Canyon and East Tanque Verde roads, shortly before 3 p.m., Capt. Barrett Baker, a Tucson fire spokesman said in a news release.

A neighbor knocked on the door to the home, but nobody answered.

When crews arrived at the house, the owner had just arrived home and opened the garage door.

When firefighters opened the door connecting the garage and the house, they saw heavy black smoke throughout the house, the release said.

When crews searched the home, they found two dogs who died because of the heavy smoke.

Crews extinguished the flames coming from the kitchen area and the fire was under control within eight minutes of their arrival at the home.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
