The uncle of a 2-year-old is booked on one count of aggravated assault for accidentally shooting his niece in the leg Saturday.
Richard Moreno, 23, was in the carport visiting the home of the toddler when he accidentally discharged his weapon, according to a news release from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department. The bullet went through a wall and struck the girl in the leg.
The girl’s injuries are non-life-threatening, officials said.
At about 1:30 p.m. Saturday, deputies from the sheriff’s department San Xavier District responded to a call of a possible shooting of a 2-year-old girl by a stray bullet while playing in her backyard on Tucson’s south side.
By the time deputies arrived at the home in the 6700 block of South Vereda de los Arboles, near West Valencia and South Mission roads, the toddler had been taken to a hospital by ambulance.
During their investigation, detectives found inconsistencies between the witness statements and the physical evidence. When they confronted the witnesses about the inaccuracies, they told detectives the 2-year-old’s uncle was responsible for the shooting, the news release said.
Moreno fled the scene but family members convinced him to surrender. He was arrested at his mother’s home and taken to the Pima County Adult Detention Center.
