The decision on whether Vail will become a town is now in the hands of its 7,100 residents.

Backers of the community east of Tucson recently turned in 1,027 signatures backing incorporation efforts to the Pima County Recorder’s office, enough to trigger a special election this fall.

The proposed size of the town is much smaller than the Vail School District, which covers an area with an estimated 30,000 residents.

The election will be held on Nov. 5.
