Don't expect a mass of color, but Mexican gold poppies are popping up along the Yetman Trail.

The Sonoran Desert is a land of stark contrasts - brought home in vivid color this week. Some of the first Mexican gold poppies of the coming spring season burst into bloom along the David Yetman Trail west of Tucson - just a week after the city was cloaked with a winter snowfall.

Don't expect big displays of poppies. So far, just a few individual flowers are showing up here and there - and the lack of abundant fall and winter rains means this year's wildflower show is likely to be less than spectacular.

To reach the Yetman Trail, drive west of Tucson on Speedway to Camino de Oeste. Turn south on Camino de Oeste and follow it 0.6 of a mile to the trailhead.
