A woman who was walking her dog Friday night was hit and killed as she crossed the street on the south side, authorities said.

Alexis Virginia Williams, 61, died at University of Arizona Medical Center after rescuers took her there. Her dog, which was also struck, died at the scene, said Deputy Jesus Bañuelos of the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.

The incident happened at 8:10 p.m. at the 3100 block of East Drexel, Bañuelos said. An SUV was going westbound on Drexel Road, when the vehicle struck Williams and her dog at the intersection of Bonney, he said.

There is no crosswalk at the intersection and speed was not a factor, Bañuelos said. The driver is cooperating with the investigation.
