Firefighters battling brush fire east of LA

MONROVIA - Residents of about 100 homes were forced to evacuate Saturday after a brush fire erupted in the San Gabriel Mountain foothills east of Los Angeles, authorities said.

The fire was sparked by a gardener working in the backyard, said Jennifer McLain, a city spokeswoman. Flames spread to the hillside behind the residence, scorching 150 acres.

The fire was not immediately threatening homes, but authorities ordered evacuations as a precaution, fire Chief Chris Donovan told KABC-TV.

The blaze was 10 percent contained.

As the Monrovia fire burned, a four-acre brush fire ignited across town near Interstate 405, forcing the closure of southbound lanes for at least an hour.

5 snowboarders killed in avalanche

GEORGETOWN - Five snowboarders were killed Saturday afternoon after apparently triggering a backcountry avalanche on Colorado's Loveland Pass, authorities said.

Search and rescue crews recovered the bodies several hours after the slide, which was 600 yards wide and eight feet deep, said Clear Creek County Sheriff Don Krueger.

A sixth snowboarder caught in the avalanche was rescued. That person's condition wasn't immediately known.

Searchers from Clear Creek County, Summit County, an Alpine search and rescue team and Loveland ski resort located the bodies, Krueger said.

The Colorado Department of Transportation closed U.S. Route 6, which crosses the Continental Divide near the scene of the avalanche, to facilitate the search. The pass is heavily traveled by skiers visiting nearby Arapahoe Basin ski resort.

Giraffe takes 1st steps at Albuquerque zoo

ALBUQUERQUE - Officials at the Albuquerque BioPark say they have a new resident.

Some zoo visitors were lucky enough to see the birth of the giraffe calf Saturday morning.

The baby giraffe learned how to stand and take its first steps inside the giraffe yard as it was surrounded by its mother, an 18-year-old giraffe named June, and two other female giraffes. Officials say the calf was on its feet and walking within 40 minutes.
