LEESBURG, Va. (AP) — The Leesburg Police Department is reporting a 12 percent drop in major crimes in 2013.

The police department says the improvement stems largely from a 13 percent drop in larcenies, the most common offense among those included in the category.

In an annual report released Monday, the department reported that larcenies dropped from 939 in 2012 to 821 in 2013.

Police say the drop came as a result of a new plan to combat retail theft.

The town had one homicide in both 2012 and 2013. Eleven rapes were reported in 2013, the same as in 2012.

Reportable vehicle crashes — those with either an injury or at least $1,500 in damages — increased by 13 percent in 2013. Distracted driving was the most common cause of crashes.
