I was heartened by two articles on Monday’s front page.
One of these is the article on former governor Brewer’s laudatory efforts to retain the Medicaid expansion provision of the Affordable Care Act, in which 31 states are now participating. Significantly, close to 400,000 Arizonans have gained Medicaid coverage under this provision which Brewer valiantly championed as governor.
The other is a report documenting how six TUSD schools have successfully created cultures that actively promote both pride and success among their predominantly low-income student bodies. Their secret, it appears, revolves around leadership that promotes strong community ties and teacher empowerment. A key ingredient is identification of “teacher leaders”, who step up from their teaching duties to help inexperienced and struggling colleagues.
Both articles highlight truly exemplary examples of public leadership we should all be proud of.
