A commander in Guaymas, the Sonoran industrial port city about 300 miles south of Tucson, was shot and killed following a pursuit through the historic downtown, Mexican media outlets reported.
Francisco Genaro Bogarín Gutiérrez, “El Boga,” was 43 years old.
The pursuit began about 12:30 p.m. Monday.
The gunmen shot the police chief multiple times while he was driving his Nissan Pathfinder, according to media reports.
The vehicle came to a stop after crashing against a stoplight.
On March 5, a municipal police supervisor in San Luis Río Colorado was also killed and burned next to the vehicle he was driving, according to a story by Proceso, a Mexican news magazine.
And on Aug. 5, 2016, the ex-chief of police in Cajeme, was shot and killed in front of dozens of people.
