Re: the May 13 article "Pregnant women on AHCCCS will have to wait for dental coverage."
The failure to move this bill forward and fund it may be a short-term victory for the budget but will result in greater long-term cost due to a persistent problem preventing childhood dental caries. Prevention of early childhood caries begins during pregnancy when mothers learn about and appropriately treat oral disease in their own mouths.
This decreases transmission of acid forming bacteria to infants and also instills in mothers the importance of early preventative care habits for their children. Healthy children and appropriately compensated educators should be our goal. It is sad that we had to choose.
