Re: the Sept. 25 article "Park Service announces grant for Giffords shooting memorial."

The National Park Service grant for the development of a memorial honoring U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Gifford's and the other victims of the Jan. 8 shooting is a waste of money. I'm tired of taxpayer money going to vanity memorials — yes, vanity. That is what the memorial really is. If the families want to put their names out their for the world to see, then they should pay for it on their own.

I think of all the tragic deaths that occur to people, not just politicians or those attending a political rally, but common folk. Where are all the memorials to them? What is the memorial supposed to do anyway? Make us remember and never forget that meaningless acts of violence are part of our lives? Who doesn't already know this? I'd like the money to go to fix the holes in the walls and missing ceiling tiles and broken drinking fountains and other physical problems in our public schools. Make them a better place for teachers and students.
