Poverty is not an option. It is a life sentence handed down to every child born into it.

Please tell me how a child born into poverty will become a responsible community member. Tell me how a child born into poverty will not turn to crime, alcohol, or drugs when faced with a future as bleak as their parents'. Tell me how a child born into poverty will learn to love his country.

We offer staggeringly little to enhance the options of these children, and thus our society. It looks like we'll be offering even less in the future — all so that those who already have more than their fair share can have even more.
