Re: the Jan. 2 pro and con "Should feds ban diesel and gas-powered autos?"

The easiest way to end this debate is to make sure that the harmful emissions from gas and diesel vehicles are built into the purchase price of those fuels. Placing a fee on the carbon content of any fuel would allow the market to drive a switch to cleaner forms of energy.

If the fee were then rebated to the American public, people would still be free to purchase any vehicle they wish; they wouldn’t be free to poison the air at no cost to themselves. Doing this would result in fewer deaths from asthma, create new jobs, give all Americans additional monetary resources and reduce climate changing gas emissions. All of this without any intrusive federal regulations — a win for all.
