Re: the Dec. 6 column "Politicians manipulate deficit label for their own benefit."

Jonah Goldberg’s column provides cogent presentations of his perspective. However, he fails to observe we have entered a new frontier. In part what the solid majority in Congress did recently is pass a tax policy for which the direct benefits were largely focused on their constituencies. They are the elected majority.

The new frontier is that they voted for the largest debt allowable under current law. A course completely opposite the longstanding tenets of their party. Moreover, it is now intended, as clearly stated by Republican leadership, the deficit will be used as a weapon for dismantling current U.S. policies and programs, such as the Children’s Health Insurance Program, Social Security and Medicare.

As noted by Senator Grassley regarding the majority of his fellow Americans: “those that are just spending every darn penny they have, whether it’s on booze or women or movies.” You get what you vote for.
