The USA needs to change our gun culture. Gun ownership is protected by the Constitution, but the right to use or discharge guns is not. Nor should the Second Amendment be interpreted as license for possession of any kind of “gun” imaginable.

Changing that culture will not be achieved simply by changing any specific law, and certainly not by suggesting expansive mental health evaluations and treatments. The culture needs to change to continue to embrace acceptance of the Second Amendment, but to recognize that guns are dangerous weapons, and they should be treated as such. A key example of a first step is currently before the U.S. Congress regarding the legalization of silencers. We don’t need them, and the Constitution does not protect them. Criminals and terrorists would be delighted to have free access to them. There is no good argument for silencers except for the money to be made by the gun industry and furtherance of a culture of gun violence. Our elected representatives should vote no.
