Re: the Oct. 5 column "No law can prevent someone from committing evil acts."
Like much of our ideological propaganda, recent reactions to the Las Vegas shootings are full of deceptive half-truths. Cal Thomas and others are contending that stricter gun laws will not eliminate gun-related violence. While this carries a grain of sense, the same argument could be made about laws against murder, rape, and armed robbery. Yet we have these laws presumably because we belief they will make these heinous crimes less likely and not as frequent. It is time for our Congress to show some courage and tell the NRA that denying the mentally ill weapons of mass destruction will not threaten our 2nd Amendment and there are reasonable restrictions that can simultaneously protect our rights and keep us safe.
