"At long last, have you left no sense of decency?" With that question in 1954, Joseph N. Welch, chief U.S. Army counsel to Sen. Joseph McCarthy's Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, the Communist-hunting McCarthy’s reign of terror began to implode — not because McCarthy had any decency, but because enabling fellow Republicans’ support finally waned. Here we are again.

When the viperous demagogue in the White House trashed Sen. John McCain’s POW ordeal, then slimed a Gold Star family, I expected that Republican decency would exact a price. How naïve of this Democrat. Now the Draft Dodger-in-Chief refuses to condemn aide Kelly Sadler's loathsome crack that McCain’s opinions no longer matter because “he will be dead soon anyway.” And so I ask his Republican enablers – who just love “our troops’’ to pieces: “At long last, have you left no sense of decency?’’
