Re: the Dec. 28 guest column "How we can all help Tucson Unified School District."

I support Dustin Williams' invitation. For the past several years, I have volunteered one morning a week at a local grade school, working principally with struggling young readers. It has been a joy to see these young people progress from grade to grade.

My admiration for teachers continues to grow. They dedicate their energies to the young despite their low salaries, lack of basic supplies, and, sadly, even lack of appreciation by parents. So, yes, volunteer. You are needed. Even a few hours a week makes a difference. The hugs in the hallway from former students are the greatest wage you'll ever earn.
