It is unfortunate that bad information on plate tectonics mechanism is printed by the AP. The Hawaiian Islands sit on a plate extension, which causes fractures through which magma rises. On the West Coast, the plates collide with the continental shelf and sink back to be remelted at depth. That collision pressure causes fractures in the continental crust through which magma can rise. Two totally different mechanism and the likes of Geranios of AP should not disseminate such inaccurate concerns.
