We grew up receiving sweaters and turtlenecks and gloves for Christmas not because it ever got really cold here, but because of the Holiday Bowl. Every year at the game, for some reason, San Diego turned into Hoth, the ice planet - at least for kids accustomed to wearing shorts to school every day.
