Slideshow guide: The D-M Thunder and Lightning over Arizona air show

  • A performance by the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, aerial displays including Davis-Monthan Air Force Base units and more than 40 aircraft ground displays highlight “Thunder and Lightning over Arizona,” D-M’s 2014 open house, set for takeoff Saturday and Sunday. Click through our slideshow for a look at the biennial show, including a guide to some of the aircraft you’ll see.

    • When: Saturday and Sunday (April 12-13). Gates open at 9 a.m. Flying demonstrations start around 11 a.m. and end around 3:30 p.m. (Thunderbirds perform around 2 p.m.); gates close at 5 p.m.
    • Where: Davis-Monthan Air Force Base; enter through the Craycroft Road gate or Swan Road gate off East Golf Links Road.
    • Security: Be prepared to undergo security procedures when parking on base and entering the display area. Davis-Monthan personnel have the right to turn anyone away who fails to consent to a search.
    • Parking: Attendees will be directed to parking after entering gate. Handicap parking available at Craycroft gate only. Last entry is at 2 p.m. There is no shuttle service or offsite parking. Plan to walk a long distance from the parking lots to the display areas.
    • Cost: Entry to open house and parking are free; Beer Garden admission is $30 (includes first beer); FlightLine Club is $110; Box seats, box of 10 seats, $300 (order tickets through noon Friday at; ride tickets are extra.

    • Each person can bring one plastic water bottle,which can be refilled for free at various spots around the display areas.
    • Baby food, formula, milk and water (no glass containers)
    • Carts for physically challenged/disabled visitors

    • Service animals (no other animals allowed)

    • Sunscreen

    • Any potentially airborne items, including balls, balloons and kites
    • Bicycles, go-karts, wagons, scooters, skates and skateboards
    • Backpacks, purses and/or camera bags larger than 18 by 24 inches

    • Chairs and folding chairs (rental chairs available for $5 in display area)
    • Coolers
    • Food, beverages and alcohol from outside the base
    • Military uniforms worn by nonmilitary members
    • Political activity/demonstrations and associated paraphernalia
    • Umbrellas and folding canopies
    • Weapons
  • Receptacles located near the display areas will be available for donations of nonperishable food items for the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona.
