In this year leading up to Arizona's centennial, Feb. 14, 2012, we'll reprint a story or excerpts each day from the Arizona Daily Star or Tucson Citizen archives.

Nov. 10, 1912

The Tucson Chamber of Commerce will, within a few days, inaugurate a crusade for the abolishment of the mail order business and attempt to educate the patrons of mail order houses to buy at home. The argument will be, and it should have its effect among those who wish to see a greater Tucson, that if the people now spending out of this city for their merchandise and groceries will patronize home merchants, these same merchants will find business increasing to such an extent that it will be necessary to place on at least another clerk. Another clerk means another family, which eventually means a larger population in Tucson.
