Taylor McQuillin’s first career no-hitter and two more home runs by Jessie Harper helped the University of Arizona softball team end the season-opening Kajikawa Classic with a blowout win.
The No. 7-ranked Wildcats won their third straight game by shutting out New Mexico 8-0 on Sunday in Tempe. The UA broke the game open with six runs in the fourth and then ended the game via the mercy rule when the Lobos (1-3) didn’t score in the fifth.
McQuillin struck out 11 to improve to 3-1 on the year. Her attempt at a perfect game ended when she issued a one-out walk in the fifth.
Harper hit a two-run homer in the third and added a three-run shot in the fourth. She went 8 for 15 at the event with four homers and 10 RBIs. All four of her home runs came in the last two games.
Aleah Craighton added a three-run run homer in the sixth for the Wildcats. Harper, Reyna Carranco and Dejah Mulipola all had two hits as the top four hitters in the UA lineup went a combined 7 for 12.
UA next plays Colorado State at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Hillenbrand Invitational. Bryant, Louisiana-Monroe, Montana and Troy will also compete at the four-day event, to be held at Hillenbrand Stadium.
The Arizona baseball team opens its season at 6 p.m. Friday with a game against Bryant at Hi Corbett Field.
