Before the Major League Baseball draft began, Brandon Dixon was told he would get a heads-up a couple of minutes before he was selected.
So you can imagine the Arizona Wildcats third baseman’s reaction when he heard his name called Friday morning on his dad’s computer as the third-round selection of the Los Angeles Dodgers with no warning phone call.
“I was just casually watching and heard my name,” Dixon said. “Me and my family kinda freaked out. I had to look at the computer screen and make sure it was really my name and not someone else’s.”
It was really his name.
The Murrieta, Calif., native was the 92nd overall pick of the draft and the Dodgers’ third selection.
He was the first of three UA players to be selected Friday-the second day of the three-day event.
Outfielder Johnny Field was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the fifth round (No. 158 overall) and right-handed pitcher Konner Wade was the seventh round selection of the Colorado Rockies (No. 199 overall).
