Arizona Wildcats baseball coach Andy Lopez is in stable condition at a local hospital and will undergo heart surgery Monday, the UA said in a news release Friday night.

Doctors will perform a triple bypass on Lopez, who led the UA to the 2012 national championship. He is expected to make a full recovery and return to coaching once he is cleared by doctors.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Andy and his family,” athletic director Greg Byrne said in the release. “Thankfully the medical team caught it when they did and we expect Andy to make a full recovery. This is a great reminder for all of us to be mindful of our health.”

Lopez, who will turn 60 in November, is in his 13th season with Arizona, and owns a 1,124-685-7 record in 31 years as a collegiate head coach. He has led the UA to eight postseason appearances and two College World Series berths. He has a record of 437-267-1 at UA.

The coach recently had his contract extended through the 2018 season. It was approved by the Arizona Board of Regents last month.

This isn’t the first time Lopez has been hospitalized. While head coach at Florida in 1996, Lopez experienced chest pains on a flight back from a weekend road series. The plane made an emergency landing in Savannah, Ga., and the coach was rushed to the hospital.

“It was tenseness and stress, tight this and tight that,” Lopez told the Star’s Greg Hansen in 2012.

Lopez felt similar symptoms again during the summer of 2009. He drove to Tucson Medical Center and spent the night in the hospital.

The UA begins full-team fall workouts on Monday. Lopez and his staff have been working with the team in small groups for the past several weeks.
