Ironwood Ridge handed Notre Dame Prep its first playoff loss back on May 2, but it was the Saints who got the last laugh, winning 3-2 in eight innings Saturday night to eliminate the Nighthawks from the postseason.
"It was a great game," Nighthawks coach Dennis Toia said. "It was a shame someone had to lose."
Hoping to avoid losing back-to-back games for the first time all season, I-Ridge scored a run in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 2 in Glendale.
After three strong innings of relief from Nighthawks pitcher Alex Nolan, the Saints finally got to the junior in the eighth.
I-Ridge had plenty of chances, but for the second time in two games the Nighthawks went 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position.
"A couple of different times we just needed one more hit," said Toia.
• Scottsdale Chaparral 7, Tucson 5: In Tempe, neither Tucson High nor Scottsdale Chaparral wanted its season to end Saturday night, but it was the Firebirds that outlasted the Badgers in eight innings of Division I semifinal action.
In a 5-0 hole after three innings, No. 2 Tucson began chipping away with runs in the fourth and fifth, but it was a tying three-run seventh that gave the Badgers new life.
With no intentions of losing to Tucson for the second time in two weeks, Chaparral answered with two runs in the top of the eighth.
The Badgers threatened one last time, bringing the tying run to the plate with two outs and one on, but Felipe Peralta popped out.
