Tim Stauffer continues to make a push for a big-league promotion. His Tucson Padres, however, keep struggling.

Stauffer allowed one run over six innings and struck out eight Wednesday night, but the Padres bullpen faltered in a 4-2 loss to Tacoma at Cheney Stadium. The Rainiers will try for a four-game sweep of the visitors tonight.

Stauffer has posted a 2.35 ERA in his last four starts, and has struck out more than twice as many batters (21) as he's walked (10). The former first-round pick is trying to return to San Diego: He has made 78 major-league appearances since 2009.

The Rainiers (17-10) scored their final three runs off Padres reliever Tommy Layne, who entered for Stauffer in the seventh with the Padres leading 2-1. Denny Almonte drove in two runs with a one-out double.

Brandon Allen and Dean Anna both drove in runs for the Padres (11-15). Anna is hitting .338 this season, and is second on the team behind Daniel Robertson's .343.
