Chris Heston pitched a five-hitter and struck out nine Thursday night to lead Fresno past visiting Tucson 2-0.
Heston and Tucson's Burch Smith dueled through six innings, with Smith allowing just a fifth-inning run on a Gary Brown homer. But Smith was done after six innings, having thrown 92 pitches.
Brad Brach pitched a scoreless seventh, and Colt Hynes allowed a run in the eighth.
Dean Anna had three of Tucson's five hits. Carter Jurica had three hits for Fresno.
The Padres loaded the bases in the ninth. With two out, Rene Rivera fell behind in the count 0-2, then worked the count full before watching the third strike to end the game.
Tucson begins an eight-game homestand tonight with the first of four against Reno. A four-game set with Las Vegas begins Tuesday.
