SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Jerami Grant scored 15 points in his first start of the season, Rakeem Christmas matched his career high with 15 points, and No. 2 Syracuse beat Eastern Michigan 70-48 on Tuesday in the final nonconference game for both teams.

Syracuse (13-0) raced to a 20-point lead in the first half, allowed the Eagles to slice it in half before the break, then regained control early in the second and won its 51st straight nonconference game in the Carrier Dome.

The Orange are one of seven unbeaten teams in Division I and begin play in the Atlantic Coast Conference against Miami on Saturday.

No. 3 Ohio St. 78, Purdue 69: In West Lafayette, Ind., LaQuinton Ross had 25 points and 12 rebounds, both career bests, and Shannon Scott added a career-high 18 points for the Buckeyes.

No. 5 Michigan State 79, Penn State 63: In State College, Pa., Branden Dawson scored 20 points and Keith Appling had 14 for the Spartans in the Big Ten opener for both teams.

No. 7 Duke 86, Elon 48: In Greensboro, N.C., Andre Dawkins scored 15 points, Rodney Hood had 13 and freshman Jabari Parker added 12 and a season-high-tying 10 rebounds for the Blue Devils.

No. 11 Villanova 73, Butler 73 OT: In Indianapolis, JayVaughn Pinkston had 22 points and the Wildcats rebounded from its first loss of the season with an overtime victory in the Big East opener for both teams.

No. 13 Iowa State 99, Northern Illinois 63: In Ames, Iowa, DeAndre Kane had 16 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists and Iowa State won its 12th straight.

No. 14 Louisville 90, Central Florida 65: In Orlando, Fla., Russ Smith hit six three-pointers and finished with 24 points and nine assists for the Cardinals in the American Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

Houston 75, No. 17 UConn 71: In Houston, TaShawn Thomas scored 23 points, including two free throws with 9 seconds left, and blocked a late layup by Shabazz Napier as Houston rallied for the victory.

No. 18 Memphis 88, South Florida 73: In Tampa, Fla., Geron Johnson scored 19 points and Memphis beat South Florida in the American Athletic Conference season opener for both teams.

No. 19 North Carolina 84, UNC Wilmington 51: In Chapel Hill, N.C., James Michael McAdoo had 23 points and 10 rebounds and the Tar Heels became the third program to reach 2,100 victories.

No. 22 Iowa 67, Nebraska 57: In Iowa City, Iowa, Devyn Marble had 15 points and eight rebounds and the Hawkeyes opened their Big Ten season with a victory.
