Numbers game

For decades, the Arizona Wildcats' best players have been synonymous with the numbers they've worn on their jerseys.

But not all numbers are unique. So we decided to ask the question: Who is the quintessential player to wear that number?

Who wore it best?

The number: 44

The showdown: A special three-way debate: Reggie Geary vs. Richard Jefferson vs. Solomon Hill

The comparison

Reggie Geary (1992-96)

The stats: His 208 career steals and 560 career assists rank Nos. 4 and 6 in UA history, respectively.

The details: The defensive whiz averaged 7 points, 3.1 rebounds and 4.4 assists in four years, losing only 23 of 127 career games. His 231 assists in 1995-96 were the second-most in UA history.

The postscript: The second-round pick in the 1996 draft lasted two seasons in the NBA before a coaching career earned him stops at SMU and the UA. His Yokohama B-Corsairs won a title in Japan this year.

Richard Jefferson (1998-2001)

The stats: Jefferson averaged 11.2 points, 5 rebounds and 2.8 assists in three seasons at the UA.

The details: Jefferson started all but one game in 2001, helping guide the Wildcats to the national title game with 11.3 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists. He was named to the all-Final Four team.

The postscript: The 13th pick of the 2001 draft has played for four NBA teams and won a bronze medal with the 2004 U.S. Olympic team.

Solomon Hill (2009-12)

The stats: In four years at the UA, Hill totaled 1,430 points, good for No. 20 - behind No. 19 Steve Kerr - on the Wildcats' all-time list.

The details: Hill started the last 113 games of his career. As a senior, he averaged 13.4 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.7 rebounds en route to All-Pac-12 honors. He scored in double figures 76 times in his career.

The postscript: Hill is preparing for this year's NBA draft.

The one-sentence debate: Geary might have the best college resume and Jefferson the best post-graduate work, while Hill's consistency over four years could earn him credit.
