Arizona center Kaleb Tarczewski will not play for the Arizona Wildcats tonight against Southern because of an ankle sprain suffered last Saturday at Michigan.
Freshman forward Rondae Hollis-Jefferson will receive his first career start as a result, with UA expected to shift Brandon Ashley to center and Aaron Gordon to power forward.
UA trainer Justin Kokoskie said Tarczewski did eight hours of rehabilitation on Wednesday but wasn’t healed enough to risk playing tonight. Kokoskie said Tarczewski has been working on his strength, balance and conditioning.
“We’ll shoot for tomorrow or the next day but we’re also not going to put him in a position of risk,” Kokoskie said.
Tarczewski appeared at UA's pregame warmups wearing a sweatsuit.
Tarczewski is planning to remain in Tucson during UA’s three-day Christmas break, and he’s expected to rehab the entire time. The Wildcats will play NAU on Monday and then will not practice again until Dec. 27.
