The basketball state tournament opened Tuesday night with the Division III boys and continues tonight. Eight local girls teams play as Divisions I, II and III get their tournaments under way. Here are Tuesday night's results:

• No. 11 Thatcher 70, No. 22 Empire 54: At Thatcher, the Eagles outpaced the Ravens to snap a two-game losing streak and end Empire's season at 16-12. It was the team's fourth loss in the final six games.

Empire sophomore Deion James had scored at least 18 points in six of the previous seven games before Tuesday night's season-ending loss.

• No. 16 Show Low 64, No. 17 Benson 60: At Show Low, the Bobcats suffered their second straight loss, dropping out of the Division III state tournament. Benson started the season 8-1 and finished with a 20-10 mark.

• No. 18 Safford at No. 15 Rio Rico: The game was postponed until today at 7 p.m. because of weather conditions that caused the Santa Cruz Valley School District to cancel classes Tuesday.

Rio Rico (18-10) had won six straight games before losing in the section tournament to second-ranked Gilbert Christian.
