Defense wins championships. So far, it has two Southern Arizona high school basketball teams in in line to do just that.

Flowing Wells' girls and Salpointe Catholic's boys have been limiting their opponents offensively; they'll look to do the same in today's Division II state championship games at Jobing.com Arena in Glendale.

Sixth-seeded Flowing Wells has won 15 straight games and held 11 consecutive opponents to under 40 points. The Caballeros (29-4) face No. 8 Scottsdale Saguaro at 10 a.m. With a win, Flowing Wells will bring home its first state title since 2008.

Salpointe will face No. 4 Paradise Valley in the next game. The Lancers are in search of their seventh win in the last eight games and their first-ever boys basketball state title. Sixth-seeded Salpointe has given up an average of 51.9 points over its last eight games, and second-year coach Brian Holstrom said his defense is at its best in the fourth quarter.

"The last two games, teams have struggled against us in the final two minutes," Holstrom said. "They can't even get looks, they can't even get passes and it's just a tribute to our defense."
