Ka’Deem Carey’s sophomore season got better tonight — even though it’s already over.

Oregon’s Kenjon Barner failed to catch Carey in rushing yards in the Ducks' Fiesta Bowl win over Kansas State, giving the Wildcats running back the NCAA rushing title.

Carey’s final totals of 1,929 yards and 148.38 yards per game are tops in the nation and won’t be eclipsed. Barner needed 306 yards to pass Carey. He finished with 143 yards on 30 carries and ended the season with 1,767 yards.

The Canyon del Oro product won the title by 46 yards over Nevada’s Stefphon Jefferson.

Carey is the first UA player in 57 years to lead the nation in rushing. Art Luppino rushed for 1,313 yards in 1955 en route to his second consecutive title. The famed "Cactus Comet" has been watching Carey from his Texas home; he told the Star's Greg Hansen last month that he was happy to cede his school records to Carey, whose style of play he admires.
