Jesse Scroggins will have to wait a little longer to begin his quest to become the Arizona Wildcats starting quarterback.

Coach Rich Rodriguez announced this morning that Scroggins, who recently had foot surgery, will be a very limited participant in spring practice when it starts Saturday.

"Scroggins had foot surgery, which is something he probably needed to get fixed earlier in his career," Rodriguez said. "We had a choice. We probably could have played with it, but I'd rather have everyone be 100 percent in August than have a question mark if he tweaks it or something.

"He'll be very limited this spring. He won't be in any full-contact practices."

Scroggins transferred to the UA from El Camino College (Calif.) after spending two seasons at USC.

Scroggins' injury leaves B.J. Denker as the QB most likely to run with the first team this spring.

Anu Solomon, who signed with the Wildcats earlier this month, won't join the team until the summer. That leaves Denker, Javelle Alen and Nick Isham to get the majority of the snaps. Walk-ons Alex Cappellini and Jack Nykaza are also on the roster.

"B.J. Denker has proven himself a little bit because he's played some," Rodriguez said. "He's the only one. I'm anxious to see how much better he got in the spring."

The Wildcats will hold their first practice of the spring this Saturday at 9 a.m., at Kindall/Sancet Stadium. The spring game is set for April 13.
