The Arizona Wildcats will turn to a familiar face to revamp their defense.

Duane Akina has left the University of Texas for the UA, and could be named the Wildcats' secondary coach as soon as tomorrow. He replaces Greg Brown, who left last month for a position at Colorado.'s Tom Dienhart and both reported Akina's departure - and new position - tonight.

The hiring is a homecoming for Akina, 54, who spent 14 seasons (1987-2000) in Tucson as an assistant under head coach Dick Tomey. Akina was named defensive coordinator under John Mackovic following the 2000 season, but left for Texas during spring drills.

Akina spent the last 10 seasons as Texas' secondary coach, co-defensive coordinator and associate head coach under Mack Brown. The Longhorns shuffled their defensive staff when defensive coordinator Will Muschamp was hired as Florida's head coach last month.

Akina is the second veteran assistant to join the UA in as many weeks. Mike Stoops added former BYU offensive coordinator Robert Anae as offensive line coach last week. Like Anae, Akina is a three-decade coaching veteran with ties to Hawaii.

Akina and his wife, Donna, have four children: Kainoa, Keoni, Dionicia, Alli and Kamalii.
