Luis Gamez figured he’d be selected in the MLB draft sometime Saturday, he just wasn’t expecting to hear his name called so early.
In fact, the Cienega grad was still sitting in bed when the Atlanta Braves called his name in the 11th round with the 343rd pick overall causing Gamez to wonder if he was actually dreaming instead.
“I had to pinch myself a little bit; I had to take a shower, soak it all in,” said Gamez, a 6-foot-2-inch 175-pound right-handed pitcher. “I guess they really wanted me so I have to live up to the expectations now.”
Gamez was the first of five Southern Arizona products taken in the final day of the draft that started Thursday with Sahuaro's Alex Verdugo being selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the second round.
