Second-year Sierra Vista Buena football coach Ryan Scherling has been placed on paid administrative leave by the Sierra Vista School District as it investigates an internal matter involving him.
Assistant coaches Brice Bernbeck and Corey Seiuli have been named acting head coaches for the Colts in the interim.
A statement released by the district today said: "An investigation has been conducted involving Mr. Scherling. No determination has yet been made regarding whether, or to what extent, discipline may be assessed. Until Mr. Scherling has been notified of the results of the investigation and until a decision has been made regarding potential discipline, it would be premature to discuss the matter. The investigation does not involve any allegations regarding criminal acts."
District public information officer Sarah Pacheco said there is no timetable on when the matter will be resolved and that she could not go into detail about the issue because of the ongoing investigation.
Matt Hickman of the Sierra Vista Herald first reported that Scherling, who is also a teacher at Buena, was absent from practice on Tuesday night.
Last year, Scherling led the Colts to an 8-3 mark and their first playoff appearance since 1993.
Scherling also had one of the top running backs in the state in junior Dominique Drake, a transfer from Maryland who led Southern Arizona in rushing with 2,109 yards and 29 touchdowns.
With the drop from Division I to Division II this year, Buena was expected to be one of the top teams in the area.
