Sabino senior Matt Bushman verbally committed to BYU this afternoon, picking the Cougars over the Arizona Wildcats and Utah Utes of the Pac-12.

He will play both baseball and football after he serves a two-year a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Bushman, a 6-foot-6-inch 215-pound two-way star with the Sabercats, is a three-star tight end according to Scout.com recruiting service. He also had football offers from Colorado, Colorado State, Duke, Nevada Pennsylvania and San Diego State.

However, he decided BYU was the best fit for him, following the path of Quinn Gooch, who was also a football star at Sabino and chose the Cougars over the Wildcats. Both Bushman’s parents graduated from there as well.

Additionally, BYU promised Bushman a roster spot on the baseball team which also played a role in his decision as he batted .438 with 31 RBIs and eight home runs as a junior.

Through seven games this year, Bushman caught 40 passes for 992 yards and 16 touchdowns to help put the Sabercats (5-2) in position to make the Division III state playoffs.
