Empire High School softball coach Laura Espinoza-Watson resigned earlier this week.

Athletic director Jorge Mendivil confirmed the move today but offered few details about the situation.

He said Shannon Woolridge, a Vail School District employee, has filled in for Espinoza-Watson, a former UA softball player, since she resigned Tuesday.

The resignation comes as a surprise because the Ravens are ranked second in Division III and are undefeated in regular-season games with 10 games left before the state tournament.

“Obviously, there is a concern but obviously we’ve got to move forward and try to figure out what’s best for us,” Mendivil said.

Espinoza-Watson has not returned a phone message left for her earlier today.

Mendivil is hoping to hire an interim replacement by early next week. The school has already begun conducting interviews to hire someone for the remainder of the season. The job will re-open at the end of the season.
