The regular season for tennis wrapped up Tuesday afternoon but 17 local programs will play at least one more match.

Eight boys teams and nine girls squads from Southern Arizona qualified for the state tournament that begins next week. The Arizona Interscholastic Association announced the seedings for the four-round 16-team playoffs earlier today.

The Ironwood Ridge and Pusch Ridge Christian boys along with the Catalina Foothills girls are the three defending champions from the Tucson area and will all be hosting first-round matches.

Boys teams will play first-round matches Tuesday and the girls will play on Wednesday. The quarterfinals will be held May 6 and 7 while the semifinals will be on May 9. The championship matches will be May 10 at Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale.

The best chance for an all-Southern Arizona final appears to be in the Division II boys tournament with top-seeded Foothills and No. 2 Salpointe Catholic on opposite ends. The Falcons, who went undefeated this season, made the state semifinals last year while the Lancers were the Division I runner-up.

In the Division II girls tournament, second-seeded Foothills and No. 6 I-Ridge could meet in the semifinals in a rematch of last year’s championship match. The Falcons have won 18 straight matches since losing to the Nighthawks in their final regular-season match last spring.

Pusch Ridge’s boys team also went undefeated this spring and got the No. 2 seed in the Division III action. It will open up the tournament by hosting No. 15 Fountain Hills, the same team it beat 5-3 in the state finals last season.
