Salpointe Catholic senior Taylor Powell verbally committed to Nevada today.

Powell, a 6-foot-2-inch 200-pound middle linebacker, also had offers from Colorado State and Fresno State. The three-year starter is rated as a three-star recruit by Scout.com recruiting service.

As a junior, Powell averaged 11.5 tackles a game, had 21 tackles for loss, caused five fumbles and had five sacks as Salpointe’s defense was nearly impenetrable as the Lancers cruised to winning the Division II state title. He also pulled in two interceptions and was selected as a first-team All-Southern Arizona by the Star.

Salpointe coach Dennis Bene said Powell will likely also be the team’s top running back this fall. He had 18 carries for 135 yards and a touchdown in 2013.

The defending state champion Lancers open the season four weeks from today at home against Sierra Vista Buena. Salpointe has won 23 of its last 24 games.
