All-Star Carlos Quentin will spend the first three innings of tonight's game in left field for the Tucson Padres. He'll log at least two at-bats.
Quentin homered in last night's debut during his rehab from right knee surgery. Today, he fielded balls in the outfield and made throws from his regular spot.
Manager Terry Kennedy said how Quentin feels Thursday will be telling. The Padres will sit him Thursday, per his recovery schedule.
More notes before tonight's 7 p.m. start:
— Matt Clark is batting eighth tonight after scuffling to start the season. He is hitting .167 with only two extra-base hits in 78 at-bats. Clark is over-rotating his hips on his swing, Kennedy said.
"It’s a mechanical thing that became a mental thing that is both now," he said.
— The Padres added Double-A San Antonio outfielder Carlos Sosa to their roster today — the flip side to losing Jeff Suppan to the parent club — but the 30-year-old Dominican was not at Kino Stadium. The move might have been procedural, meaning the Padres claim Sosa on their roster but never see him in person.
— Asked what he expects from tonight's starting pitcher, Josh Geer, Kennedy joked: "nine-inning complete game."
