Cochise College coach Jerry Carrillo said that forward Matt Korcheck telephoned UA coach Sean Miller this morning to leave word of his commitment to the Wildcats.
Korcheck is expected to sign a letter-of-intent once the spring signing period begins Wednesday, ending a recruiting process that began last fall when UA associate head coach James Whitford first watched the former Sabino High School standout work out.
Whitford offered Korcheck a scholarship last month, Carrillo said, and UA coach Sean Miller explained his plan to him during an unofficial visit last Thursday.
Both sides appear to have interest in Korcheck redshirting next season, when the Wildcats will bring in three highly touted big men to join Solomon Hill, Angelo Chol and Kyryl Natyazhko.
"That’s why Matt is excited about this," Carrillo said. "Coach Miller told him his plan if he wants to come in and redshirt and continues to develop and grow as a player. With the roster that they foresee coming in there’s an opportunity for a couple of those guys maybe coming in and being one-and-done. Matt's going to come in and when he comes in he's going to practice hard."
Korcheck will become the Wildcats' first Tucson player since Darnell Shumpert (2009-10) and, Carrillo said, the first player from an Arizona junior college since Greg Cook (1982).
