Believe it or not, USC is actually the Pac-12’s fourth highest scoring team in league play, averaging 69.1 points a game even though they put up only 50 at UA last month.

Their offensive freedom is probably the biggest difference of note as interim coach Bob Cantu’s offense has sunk in.

“They play a lot faster,” UA coach Sean Miller said. “Their tempo is closer to UCLA’s. They thrive in transition; a lot of their threes they make in transition. They have a number of players who can handle the ball, pass and score. As the game opens up that’s when they’re at their best, no doubt about it.”

But the change hasn’t always been easy, Cantu says. Especially if the Trojans don’t feed that transition offense with defense.

“When you look back at it, we were defending and scoring, but if we’re not scoring, we’re not defending,” Cantu said. “So the evidence has got to be on playing at both ends. We’ve loosened it up and attacked in the open court, but now teams are seeing that. We have to understand when to attack in a fast break and when not to attack.”
