Not making the USA’s U19 basketball team this week could ultimately become a valuable learning experience for Arizona Wildcats forward Brandon Ashley.
Here’s what two media observers said of him after they watched the tryouts over the weekend in Colorado Springs, Colo.:
Mike DeCourcy, Sporting News: “I thought Friday (at the first scrimmage), he couldn’t find a way to make an impact. He has really good athletic ability but his motor needs to be turned up a little bit, and he’s got to work on finding ways to score.
"… I didn’t see any difference (from Ashley last season). I saw pretty much the same guy which isn’t terrible because it’s only June. It didn’t hurt him to go there because it taught him a little bit of a lesson, and he played with his future teammate (Aaron Gordon), who plays as hard as anyone in the gym, so maybe that light will go on.”
Jonathan Givony, Draft Express: “Just his lack of progress was really disappointing. You look at Jerami Grant of Syracuse a year ago and he was 190 pounds, now he’s 215. His body has filled out and I’m not sure with Brandon it’s the same thing. He looked a little lost as a player and was not very aggressive.”
Givony also had a detailed report from the trials on those who didn’t make it, noting that Rondae Hollis-Jefferson had "astounding" lateral quickness and good hustle but had too many offensive shortcomings to make the team.
DeCourcy had this feature on the surprise of the team, Louisiana-Lafayette’s Elfrid Payton.
Florida's Billy Donovan spoke about his philosophy as the U19 coach with the Gainesville Sun.
Josh Pastner is expected to hire former Wildcat guard Jason Gardner as an assistant coach at Memphis, continuing the Arizona streak (Jack Murphy, Damon Stoudamire, Luke Walton) throughout his Tiger program.
CBSSports' Matt Norlander had an early overview of Pac-12 basketball next season.
Tommy Amaker has hired former UA aide Adam Cohen as an assistant on his Harvard staff. Since leaving Arizona, Cohen has worked at USC and Rice.
Collin asked on the previous discussion thread if any of the U19 World Championship games will be televised. They won't be on TV, but there will be internet streams of the quarterfinals (July 5), semifinals (July 6) and finals (July 7) on fibatv.com
