One of the Arizona Wildcats’ top 2014 recruiting targets, wing Justise Winslow, may be approaching a decision soon.
Winslow’s godfather and travel-ball coach, Steve Trauber, said this week that Winslow visited Duke and UCLA earlier this month before spending a day in Tucson last weekend.
Winslow has previously visited UA, but Trauber said Winslow wanted to get more looks at his final choices UCLA is making a late push under new coach Steve Alford, while Trauber said Winslow has a brother in Los Angeles that also makes playing for the Bruins attractive.
“He’s trying to narrow down his list and maybe make a decision relatively soon,” Trauber told the Star. “UCLA has made some progress but I still think Arizona and Duke are probably the leading candidates.”
Winslow will get a chance to rub shoulders with three Wildcats -- Brandon Ashley, Aaron Gordon and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson -- this week at USA Basketball’s U19 World Championship team tryouts. USA will begin holding practices on Friday with 26 players and narrow the field down to 15 by Sunday night.
Twelve players will ultimately be chosen to play in the World Championships in Prague, Czech Republic, from June 27-July 7.
Is Grant Jerrett really shooting up the draft boards? ESPN's Chad Ford is indicating he is, now listing Jerrett as a late first round pick.
Couple of items from recent discussion threads (sorry for the slow response but I had to take some time off last week...)
-- gunner58 said I don't have direct quotes from Sean Miller. The reason for that is he does not generally speak to local media in the offseason outside of scheduled news conferences. When he does speak during the season, I often quote him extensively here, much more so than space allows in print.
-- Marxmadness asked if I will be covering the U19 trials in Colorado this weekend. I'm not going there but hope to cover this remotely as much as possible, with three UA players and Winslow involved.
Marxmadness also asked about UA players who have been drafted since 1989. There's been 34 of them since 1988 (if you count Robertas Javtokas, who transferred before he was drafted in 2001) and 32 since 1989. All Arizona's draft picks are listed on page 73 of the UA media guide.
