Arizona has given its basketball uniforms a "new-old" look for 2014-15.
Updating the classic uniforms from the Lute Olson era, Arizona added back trims down the sides while jettisoning the multi-color stripes on the tops of the shoulders. They now come in five different styles, all using the full word "Arizona" and have "Cats" on the side of the shorts, as UA uniforms traditionally have.
Arizona now has two home white versions, one with red trim and one with blue trim. On the road, the Wildcats will have a choice of a blue road uniform with solid red trimming and a red road uniform with solid blue trim. A fifth option for either road or home games is gray with both red and blue trim (and no, those ones don't say "Zona" like those grays from 2011-12).
UA said in a statement that it is honoring its past with the designs, while incorporating new technology in the material.
“Our entire team is excited about receiving these new uniforms,” guard T.J. McConnell said in a statement. “Not only are they going to look great, but the technology that went into making them will benefit us on the court. So many great players in Arizona history wore similar uniforms, and it’s nice to be able to honor them while we try to do some of the same great things on the court.”
UA said the jerseys will have a larger "cactus-based" aerographic on the entire back of them, while they feature more durability and articulated armholes. The shorts are 66 percent lighter and feature a fuller hemline for added mobility.
The side paneling and trim are intended to pay tribute to the uniforms the Wildcats wore for about a decade beginning in the mid-1990’s, when the Olson era peaked. (A photo from the 1998 NCAA tournament is attached to this post and here's what the blue unis looked like during the 1997 title game).
USC's Nikola Jovanovich, Utah's Jeremy Olsen and Washington's Andrew Andrews scored in double figures during the Pac-12's win over the Chinese university all-stars, the first game of the Pac-12 tour. Maybe flying biz class kept the guys fresher...
