Nearly a month ago, Kaige Lawrence received a Facebook “friend request” from a Rich Rodriguez. The 6-foot-4-inch, 290-pound offensive lineman from Chaffey Junior College (Calif.) had a hard time believing it was that Rich Rodriguez.
But after a follow-up message from the Arizona Wildcats head coach, Lawrence was a believer. Rodriguez asked the lineman to call him and when he did the coach offered him a scholarship.
Today, on an unofficial visit to the UA, Lawrence committed to Rodriguez and the Wildcats. He has one season of eligibility remaining at Chaffey. He will join the UA for the 2014 season.
“It all really came out of nowhere,” Lawrence said. “He gave me his number, I called him and they offered me on the phone. It was my first Pac-12 offer. I knew then I wanted to visit the campus. I did that today and really liked everything and it just seemed like a really good place to continue my future.”
Lawrence said he also had interest from Cal, Arizona State, Illinois and San Diego State. He was eager to end his recruitment and focus on his sophomore season at Chaffey.
The offensive lineman is the eighth player to commit to the Wildcats for 2014 and sixth offensive player. He’s the third player to pledge to the UA in as many days and fourth since Sunday.
